Dr Emily Grossman is an expert in molecular biology and genetics, with a Double First in Natural Sciences from Queens' College Cambridge and a PhD in cancer research. She also trained and worked as an actress, and now combines her skills as a science broadcaster, public speaker, writer, educator and trainer.  Emily teaches maths and sciences at all academic levels, explains science for a wide range of TV and radio programmes and gives talks in schools, universities and at live events such as The Hay Festival, Cheltenham Science Festival, The Royal Society, The Women of the World Festival and The Science Museum. She is best known as a resident expert on ITV’s The Alan Titchmarsh Show and Sky1's fact-based celebrity panel-show Duck Quacks Don't Echo hosted by Lee Mack, for many news interviews on maths and science topics, and for her fun science YouTube videos for BBC Britlab and The Royal Institution.​

Emily is also a passionate advocate for gender equality and diversity in science and she has come under considerable attack on social media for speaking out against sexism in science. She recently gave a Tedx talk at UCL on Why Science Needs People Who Cry on the value of emotions in science and society, and she has shared her personal story in a Story Collider podcast. Emily has been interviewed in The Sunday Times, The Times, The Guardian, The Daily Mail and The Sun’s Fabulous Magazine. She has spoken on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour about the politics of crying in the workplace, and has been a special guest on an episode of The Guilty Feminist podcast on crying.

​Emily also works as a communication and media skills trainer and has run training sessions for many universities, companies and institutions such as The Crick Institute, The Royal Society, The Royal Society of Biology and Famelab International.

Dr. Aarathi Prasad is based at University College London where she manages UCL Grand Challenges portfolios focused on technology and culture. Through convening cross-disciplinary research across the university and with local and international partners, her work aims to set the agenda for future research, and research-informed public and policy engagement.

Aarathi has a PhD in molecular genetics from Imperial College London. Her post-doctoral work focused on using chemical genetics to identify early therapeutic targets in cancers, and she subsequently worked in science policy, including in the UK Parliament on the passage of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 2008. She has been a science advisor to the British Council, where she developed international research collaborations and policy, and public engagement in science.

She has written and presented science documentaries for the BBC, Channel 4, National Geographic and the Discovery Channel, and co-presented with Richard Dawkins, David Attenborough and Stephen Hawking. She is the author of Like A Virgin: how science is redesigning the rules of sex; the BBC Radio4 Book of the Week In the Bonesetter’s waiting Room: travels through Indian medicine, and is a co-author of Prof Jim Al Khalili's upcoming book What's Next: what science can tell us about our fascinating future, in which she focuses on the future of genomics and genetic engineering.

We are excited to announce a new attraction launching at Science World in 2017 – the addition of a dedicated, interactive “Safety and Clean Environment Solutions” showroom.

As scientists make discoveries in an increasingly fast-moving regulatory landscape, the need for new and more sophisticated PPE, workwear, safety storage solutions, signage and workplace safety equipment becomes increasingly important.

At Science World UK on 20 September, visitors can view and demonstrate a broad selection of workplace safety products, including the testing of a wide range of workwear and PPE ranging from coveralls to spectacles.

The new showroom will provide an informative, hands-on tactile experience and include a PPE fit-testing workshop. A team of Cleanroom and Safety Specialists will be on-hand all day to guide you through new products and latest UK regulations.

Are you protected enough? That is the question…

The shape and size of the ear is different for each person. Simply using the SNR (Single Number Rating) out of a hearing protection product datasheet may not provide accurate protection levels for each worker – this is the system within the EU to indicate the amount of protection offered by a correctly fitted hearing protection device.

Finding each employee’s PAR (Personal Attenuation Rating) will help SHE/HSE officers have assurance that workers’ hearing is protected and they are compliant with the law. It is a simple, accurate and easy fit test and validation system to monitor if a selected hearing protective solution meet the required needs.

A measurement itself takes only about 10 seconds: the whole process (setting up the person, put on the hearing protection to test/validate, etc.) takes about 5-10 min. Results are then archived as reference for future purposes.

Something that a lot of us are capable of forgetting as we grow older is the potential that learning has to be fun. Professor Hal is on a mission to help as many people as possible learn through play - regardless of age or ability.

Professor Hal - full name Professor Hal Sosabowski - isn’t just about teaching young people. He is also the principal lecturer in Chemistry at the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences at the University of Brighton, and is also the university’s Professor of Public Understanding.

In addition to his more traditional qualifications, Professor Hal also holds the honour of being the first person granted permission to create explosions in the House of Commons. He also made the said explosions, which is more than Guy Fawkes ever managed. However, Professor Hal wasn’t trying to blow anyone up - instead, he was launching the UNESCO International Year of Chemistry in 2011.

When not researching or teaching chemistry undergraduates, Professor Hal travels around the country with his show “Bigger Bang”. This venture has also put on shows in Belgium, Russia, Abu Dhabi and many other locations across the world, showing the international reach that fun science can have.

On his website, Professor Hal explains: “I remember doing second order differential equations and finding them hard and uninspiring - but most things can be livened up if we know how.”

This ability to generate curiosity and trying things out just to see what will happen is a real asset for those working in experimental science, and this is why Professor Hal will be present at this year’s Science World event at Millbrook.

In addition to his live shows, Professor Hal has also created a top trumps-style card game, called “Professor Hal’s Trumps”, to make information that can be dull or dry into a fascinating voyage of discovery. There are currently Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Recycling Trumps available, with plans in the pipeline to create more. Players are encouraged to engage in (reasonable) debate about some of the more subjective elements of a card’s value, such as its Danger or Usefulness Factor, as this helps them to absorb the information

Profesor Hal has also contributed to a variety of educational television programmes - most notably the CBeebies series Operation Ouch, which won a BAFTA for Best Children’s Programme in 2015.

Discussing his appearances at Science World, Professor Hal said: “It’s great to have this opportunity to bring a touch of fun to people who specialise in scientific laboratory work, which can often be quite serious. Regardless of the setting, getting people excited about science is one of the most important things we can do, as it can transform our own research, and help encourage the next generation.”
