It is also used for purification of DNA-binding proteins. It combines with calcium chloride and utilized for the precipitation of DNA onto microprojectiles for bombardment with a gene gun. It plays an important role to reduce the amount of aging in yeast, flies, worms, and human immune cells by inducing autophagy. It serves as a precursor of spermine and essential for both normal and neoplastic tissue growth.
