General description
- Ibuprofen (2-4-isobutylphenyl propanoic acid) is a common NSAID that reduces pyrogen release and inflammation
- Ibuprofen is a racemic mixture that consists of an R-enantiomer and S-enantiomer; the S-enantiomer is proposed to be the stronger acting agent
- It is a propionic acid derivative, a short-chain saturated fatty acid bound to ethane
- Ibuprofen inhibits cyclooxygenases and reduces prostaglandin formation, inhibiting fever and pain
Applications
- Ibuprofen reduces both local and systemic inflammation; suitable for use in vitro or in vivo to study specific or broad mechanisms
