General Description
• Gelatin derived from porcine skin is a powder created from the acidic digestion of collagen and is also known as gelatin type A
• It comprises heterogeneous mixture of water-soluble proteins of high average molecular masses, including glycine, proline and hydroxyproline
Applications
• Gelatin has been used in in vitro coating cell culture to improve attachment of cell lines • It is added to PCR reactions in order to stabilize DNA Taq polymerase
• It can be used as a blocking reagent in several biological techniques including western blotting, ELISA, and immunochemistry
• It can be applied in microencapsulation assays to delivery vehicle for release of active biomolecules since it is a biocompatible polymer
• It is used as a component of media for species differentiation in bacteriology and in light microscope autoradiography
• It has been used in the generation of scaffolds for tissue engineering assays
