1-Propanol
1-Propanol (CH3)2CHOH, C3H8O, CAS No. 71-23-8, also known as propyl alcohol, propan-1-ol, ethylcarbinol, 1-hydroxypropane, optal, osmosol extra, propylic alcohol or n-propanol is a simple primary alcohol.
Physical data: Density 0.804 g/mL at 20°C; Refractive index nD20 1.384-1.386; Solidification point -127°C; Boiling range at 1013hPa between 96.5 and 98°C.
1-Propanol is a colourless, flammable and low-viscosity, semi-volatile, polar liquid with a mild and alcohol-like odour. The product is miscible with all common solvents, such as water, alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, ethers, glycols and aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons.
1-Propanol is used as a multi-purpose solvent in laboratory and industrial applications such as:
- Automotive plastics, coatings and refinish
- Cosmetics
- Pharmaceuticals and antiseptics
- Textiles
- Graphic arts, gravure, printing and inks
- Cleaning agents, floor polishers and metal degreasers
- Deicing fluids
- As an extraction agent and entrainer in azeotropic distillations
- Manufacture of insecticides and herbicides
1-Propanol should be handled cautiously because it is highly flammable and can easily ignite. It should be stored away from oxidizers, including acids and chlorine, to prevent explosion. Ingestion, inhalation, and skin absorption should be avoided as poisoning can occur.
1-Propanol is available in various pack quantities and grades, for example: Extra Pure, Extra Dry, ACS, Analytical, HPLC, Spectrophotometric and Peroxide-Free (for sequencing).
