Zentrifugenröhrchen sind unabdingbar bei der Isolierung, Stratifikation oder Dichtegradienten-Trennung von Proben unter Verwendung von Zentrifugen und Mikrozentrifugen. Sie finden vielfältige Anwendung in den Bereichen Biologie (besonders für Zellkulturen und in der Mikrobiologie) und Chemie, der klinischen Gesundheitsversorgung sowie im breiteren industriellen Umfeld.
Zentrifugenfläschchen sind speziell ausgelegt, um sehr hohen relativen Zentrifugalkräften (Relative Centrifugal Forces, RCF) von teilweise bis zu 20.000 x g RCF standzuhalten.
Kunststoff-Zentrifugenröhrchen können aus Polyethylenterephthalat (PET), Polypropylen-Copolymer (PPCO), Polycarbonat oder Polystyrol hergestellt sein. Polypropylen- und PPCO-Röhrchen sind zur Verwendung in Autoklaven geeignet und bieten ausgezeichnete chemische Resistenz sowie mechanische Belastbarkeit. Polycarbonat, PET und Polystyrol zeichnen sich durch hervorragende optische Transparenz und Einweg-Verwendbarkeit aus. Zudem werden Kunststoffröhrchen auch in eingefärbter Ausführung zum Schutz lichtempfindlicher Proben hergestellt.
Zentrifugenröhrchen aus Glas, insbesondere aus Borosilikat, stehen ebenfalls zur Verfügung. Glaszentrifugenröhrchen zeichnen sich durch ihre Wiederverwendbarkeit und Langlebigkeit aus; sie sind sowohl hitze- als auch chemikalienbeständig und beinhalten geringe Mengen an extrahierbaren Substanzen.
Zentrifugenröhrchen sind typischerweise in Fassungsvermögen von wenigen Millilitern bis zu 50 ml erhältlich. Zentrifugenröhrchen sind wahlweise mit auslaufsicheren, schraubbaren, und ein- oder aufsteckbaren Kunststoffverschlüssen erhältlich. Manche Zentrifugenröhrchen benötigen unter Umständen geeignete Adapter zur Verwendung mit bestimmten Rotormodellen.
Zentrifugenröhrchen sind in einer Reihe von Formen und Modellen erhältlich, unter anderem mit rundem Boden für generelle Anwendungen oder konischem Boden für eine vereinfachte Proben- und Pelletentnahme nach dem Spindown. Andere Ausführungen umfassen zudem freistehende Röhrchen mit flachem Boden. Zentrifugenröhrchen können mit einem weißen Feld zur einfachen Beschriftung und Identifizierung versehen sein und viele für Zellkulturanalysen bestimmte Ausführungen werden steril geliefert.
